Only the blind judge their appearance,
only the deaf, their singing talent, and
only the imbecilic make note of their intelligence.
By virtue of individual ants’ inner oblivion does the colony think, and by your confirming your right handedness, does your understanding remain but a blur of a cow face in a faceless herd. You cannot repeat what your thoughts say that you are without you being prepared to remain as you are; hippos do not realize it, but every time one introduces himself as, “a hippo, to be sure,” he has re-sealed his internment in hippo-dome. (Of course you can try to dismiss this by saying how dumb hippos are anyway, but then you miss the point.)
A man in search of the understanding, who continues to entertain seriously what is said about him in his own head, continues to shoot himself in the foot even while insisting that he wants to run. There is no grosser example of self-supported misdirection than staying entangled in this most common, and unexceptional of ordinary mortal affairs. Only the lost will say that they are lost or not, and by so saying, insure their continued lost-ness. If you really want to find the way, don’t be an idiot – just shut up…and leave it at that.
P.S. The solution of this case is: the Investigator cannot see the suspect…much less talk to him. In fact, he can’t even think about him.
