Summary

#1367 – 11/28/1994
Notes by TK

The mugger vs. his victim: thinking less vs. thinking more. The victim should take a lesson from the mugger: forget it! You are continually mugged by your own nervous system’s lower parts. It is necessary: none would attempt change without some opposition.

The News

94120-1
Although the conditions of life, (and hence man’s mind), forever change, one thing remains constant, even amidst activity of this sort, and that is: whether you call it satori. Enlightenment, awakening, or whatever-
— that’s not it.
Neither the dead, nor the slippery need be comforted.
* * *

94120-2
Don’t waste your time worrying about “Freeing the mind from its fetters” for so long as you think thoughts, the intellect is bound & chained.

94120-3
One man decided to make a list of the properties —
The lack of which would constitute true mystical poverty.

94120-4
Men will not attempt to change their position
Without a sense that there is an adversary, an enemy, some opposition,
But those on the great adventure have no adversary, save their own mind -….And of course even it’s not.

94120-5
A certain man who for some time had pursued the enlightenment
Decided to turn his energies to the enriching of his fiscal condition by appearing to have become a philosopher,
And as the first step in this new career immediately pressed his own magnum opus which he entitled: “Life sucks and I can prove it,”
Which he knew would be a success.

94120- 5–(B)
The dumber the news the more enthusiastic should sound its delivery.

94120-6
Mere originality of thought doesn’t count for much. 7- but it counts for more than its alternative.

94120-7
Another major mystical truth
Anyone who tells you that you cannot reach enlightenment unless you do this particular thing, or that particular thing
Does not themself understand what they are attempting to convey to you.

94120-8
If routine awareness is a flashlight,
And a higher level, the beam from a lighthouse,
Then the final state itself is a persistent ice within a fire.

94120-9
A just man was set upon by the unjust and later asked:
“What could they have been thinking of to do such undeserved harm to me!?”, but a warrior’s question would be:
“What could I have been thinking of to think about life!?”

94120-10
Relative conscious is not the consciousness of the awakened.

94120-11
Any true transcendental path cannot be evaluated on its surface – for it has none, and even if, for public purposes, it does — it still can’t. Be,
Surface is thought–experience, experience.

94120-12
A mystic told a “Wanna-be-er”:
“There are no guarantees in this kind of activity. Well, there is one, but it has to do with proper dry cleaning practices.”

94120-13
The one thing you never can discuss with the mind
Is the fact that enlightenment is not something you think about.

94120-14
Yet another sterling benefit of this sort of endeavor is that there is no explanation for failure.

94120-15
All known, and thus simplistic mystical traditions
Say that enlightenment has some public purpose, (such as):
“The awakened serve as an inspiration to others”, (etc.);
While the actual benefit of the state accrues only to those who experience it, from the collective’s view it must seem selfless…and yet, it is its own, sole raison d’etre.

94120-16
Thinking-about what happens in life
Is how the mind distinguishes itself from life,
The necessary beginnings of consciousness, but not necessary the only possible climax.

94120-17
All superior intelligence must be mystical in that it must transcend the presently known.

94120-18
No matter what it may be called —
To mentally stop the flow of life is not the way of the awakened.

94120-19
Even allegory must be constantly updated.

94120-20
Those-who-know-what’s-going-on actually have nothing to say, but if those-who-know-what’s-going-on did say nothing, the trail leading to such awareness would be easily lost to man.
A man once asked a mystic:
“Is there really any reason to do all this?”
And the mystic thought so highly of the man that he gave no reply.

94120-21
You could say that when you no longer know what to think – you’re half way home.
