Upper and lower circuit hungers. Upper circuit hungers are not necessary to stay alive, but in the City they are necessary. They are new versions/reflections, non-negative distortions of the lower circuit hungers. They must be seen for what they are by the Real Revolutionist. Man the cellular organization which the more complex the more possibility to malfunction; the lower circuit hunger focus = less chance to malfunction. To see the upper circuit hungers for what they are is the same thing; results in less mechanical complexity. This is an approach to “Know thyself”.
The “First Story”. Life has a First Story for everything. It is the seeming obvious, satisfying, meaningful explanation of anything that effectively blocks further investigation of same. Real explanation: Red Circuit hunger is not for upper circuit hungers. Examples of First Stories: environmental influence; talk can make a difference; ‘live & learn’ (piecemeal self knowledge); money counts; man invents God; prayer is efficacious; ‘fad’ facts (e.g., ‘winter depression’ = lack of sun) of personal benefit.
There are no new data personal benefits except at lower circuit level. Find your own examples of First Stories. Note that when you find one, the question immediately arises: “is that really one?” Real Revolutionists are “shallow”, can willfully treat everyday life as an act –a drama. Willfully acting is what This Thing is about.

Before I get to the heart of show time, I want to hit a few things connected to what I’ve said recently. Sort of a setup. I know that not all of you feel comfortable with my description of the division between the upper and lower circuits’ hungers. (Those of you who do feel comfortable are just as bad off, because you shouldn’t be.) The lower circuit hungers are what you have not incorrectly thought of in the past as the drive for self-preservation. The drive, that is, to fight off death as long as you can: to feed yourself, to get proper sex, to get proper relaxation and physical activity. It is not that the lower circuit hungers are good as opposed to the upper circuit hungers being bad. Don’t fall into that trap. But they are different. The interesting part is that the upper circuit hungers are literally not necessary to stay alive.
Now, it becomes a matter of degree. Back in the city, for some people the upper circuit drives for position, recognition, fame and admiration come very close to being necessary. Did you get that? Now let me clarify it. In the city, they are necessary. (I just wanted to sneak up on you.) This is not an attack on humanity; and lest all of you want to jump on the bow of the ship and look out at “all those other fools” — look to yourself. Look down your own nervous system and you will find traces of concern over defending your pack position, feeding your vanity, and nurturing your self-esteem. And they all feel just as necessary and pressing as the need to feed yourself reasonable amounts of protein, vitamins and carbohydrates. Do you hear me?
Don’t choke on this, but it is now as important in the city to feed one’s vanity and self-esteem as it is to feed one’s body edible food. To do This though, you’ve got to be able to plot things out in a different way. Because the information Here is not binary: it’s not either this or that. You cannot attack and work on this upper/lower situation with the idea that the lower circuit drives are “good” and the upper circuit drives are “bad.” They aren’t bad. They’re not even useless, because to ordinary people they are required. But you have got to see for yourself that you personally can do without the upper circuit ordinary drives. I’m not telling you that you have to do without the best car you can afford, or that you have to live beneath your means. What I want you to try and see is that each and every one of the upper circuit hungers, as they are now, can prudently and correctly be seen to be a kind of distorted and reinterpreted reflection of the very ancient and basic hungers of the lower circuit. Do you see that the desire to wear the fanciest gown you can afford is simply a version of covering yourself up from the elements? That’s all it is. Or the desire to have a ritzy apartment — it is a reflection of the need for basic shelter.
Again, it is not that in some way humanity has become deluded. All of these upper circuit hungers are new versions. It is quite understandable. How much activity would you be engaged in if you were satisfied? Let’s say you really splurged and took $100 down to a clothing outlet store — that would be your wardrobe for a year. (Of course, none of you know how little wardrobe you really need.) To humanity in general, that is not sufficient. The rest of the time you would be sitting around wasting Life’s time, and Life does not need you to help it waste time. There does not seem to be any shortage of bums, ne’er do wells, and hermits. So, what’s left? “Since a $1.98 moo-moo won’t get it, what I need is a $10,000 gown.” Now you’ve got some action. Now you’ve got humanity back at work. You now have energy being transferred.
I have mentioned Man as an organization of cells before. That is no secret, but ordinary consciousness cannot hold a continuing awareness of it. I also pointed out in passing that the more complex an organization or structure is, the more prone it is to malfunction. If you begin to get a proper view of the difference between lower and upper circuit hungers, the less likely you will be to malfunction. It will change your behavior. You will be less likely to find yourself doing the unexpected — which is to malfunction. Once you see that upper circuit hungers are necessary, new versions of basic lower circuit needs, there is a way in which you can be less mechanically complex.
To do This properly, you need to be armed, and you need to be mean, and you need to be lean. You do not need to be artificially complex. If you can see what the upper circuit hungers are and you still want a Lamborghini or a $10,000 gown, it’s none of my business. I don’t want to know about it, but if that’s your hobby it’s fine. Once you understand that you are indeed, as Shakespeare guessed, part of a drama, you can escape some of the complexities. People throughout history hear “Know Thyself” and vibrate sympathetically, because “I don’t know myself.” I’ve already told you — people know themselves. The main thing is that they don’t like it, and the other thing is that they don’t see the pertinence of it.
Okay, I’ve stalled around enough. I want to talk to you about something new. I even have my own term for it. It came to me, as always. Whoever writes my material came through again. It is: First Story. My opening line will be: Life has a First Story for everything.
Let me tell you what First Story is, to get us going. You catch a kid doing something and you say, “Why did you do that?” And the kid will go, “Well, er, well…” They always have a First Story when they’re really on the spot. One of the good ones is, “Well I didn’t do it. Sis did it. One of the kids down the block did it. As a matter of fact, he just left town — but he did it.” That is First Story. Every kid worthy of the name kid has a First Story, if he can talk. Every kid in the world, no matter how old, has a First Story. Life has a First Story for everything. Everything. And I’m going to give you some sickening, if not inspiring, examples.
If it were not for some extraordinary information you would never get anywhere in life because you would continue, along with everybody else, to uselessly struggle with the First Story. It is part of the great trick. Listen: there are some good lower circuit people at a bar, bricklayers, ditch diggers — people of our ilk. At any rate, there they are and onto the TV flashes a picture of a Ferrari, and one says, “You know, I just heard that one of those things costs $100,000.” And all the bricklayers go, “Yeah. I always figured the rich suffered from ingrown brains. Who would pay $100,000 for a car!?”
Life’s First Story, “Sure they laugh, because they can’t afford one.” It meets all the requirements because it seems to answer any question you have. “Sure they’re going to laugh at paying $100,000 for a car. What else are they going to do? Some of them probably won’t make that much money total before they die.” That is First Story. And let me tell you the purpose of First Stories: they seem to be meaningful explanations, but above all, they stop any further investigation. Life is trying to get out of something, and in a sense it’s the same thing a kid does. But here is part of the subtle nature of how the information has grown with the evolution of consciousness, but the trick has stayed the same. The tacit part of the First Story answer to my example is that these lower circuit people would like to have a Ferrari as much as you or I would. But First Story doesn’t get it. Because if the bricklayer’s laughter is indeed coming from the lower circuit, what that circuit is saying (if it could talk) is, “Even if I had $100,000 I wouldn’t spend it on a car.”
I assume that enough of you are catching on. This data that I present is hidden only because ordinary consciousness can’t touch it. It runs in parallel to Life’s First Story. First Story is satisfying enough to stop you from going any further, left to your own devices. Some other examples of First Story: the effect of the environment explains human behavior. Another: the world is binary. Another: talk will either make a difference or the difference. Another: in some way a person can gradually get to know himself. And, of course, still fail to realize at your time of death that you’re no better off than when you started. That one is a great example of First Story. If you had another view of so-called gradual change, you would see that everything you have done along those lines up until now has had no effect whatsoever. You, in truth, do not know any more about you than you ever knew.
Another good First Story is that money itself has some real significance over your 70 years here. And another is that Man is driven to personalize life, and especially death, and call it religion. Along those lines, since I’m over in the religious ghetto, another First Story is that patronizing the gods with prayer and ritual will have some sort of effect. There is no proof whatsoever that it works. None. Except the First Story. It is as if Life, whenever it wants to, can slosh paint on everybody — that is, the First Story — and it becomes a part of human consciousness.
There’s another First Story that is really good. It is an assumption on humanity’s part that there is available a continual discovery, if not unraveling, of new facts which will prove personally beneficial. It is like fad facts. A present example is now known as “winter depression.” Psychologists and medical doctors now find a substance in humans which, due to decreased sunlight, can bring on depression during the winter. It is a faddish fact. It will be good for maybe two years and then you’ll never hear about it again. Right now it is a pretty hot topic. They are treating people by exposing them to light. But two years from now if you ask a psychologist about it, you’ll draw a blank look. Still, the First Story is that new facts like this are being uncovered all the time, in all areas of science and medicine, and will prove personally beneficial. If you were my good clinical observer with blood of ice water in your brain, you would have to face up to the fact that none of these new fad facts have personally benefited you as long as you’ve been alive.
You don’t see what’s going on? As long as you can believe in the accumulation of beneficial facts, who’s going to be all that upset? It’s like being a passenger on the Titanic. The captain stands on the bridge shouting out new events to the passengers, “A trap shoot on the stern at Level 3! A dance in the dining room! A famous scientist will give a lecture in the auditorium!” And you run from here to there, here to there.
You should look for your own examples of First Story. You should be able to think of one right now. But see if you can hear this: there is no question of an example striking you, but simultaneously another question arises. That is, “Is the example I just thought of, really an example of First Story?” You do understand — if you thought of it, yes. It is an example. I don’t care what it was. That is the beauty of First Story. If you think, on the playing field as it is now, and by the rules as they now stand, that you have a dog’s chance of outsmarting Life, you might as well be wrestling with a planet. But ordinary people believe they do it continually in the upper circuits. “I’m not going to be fooled. I’m not your everyday idiot. Life cannot continually pull the wool over my eyes.” The First Story. I surely should not be required to drag it right up to the matter of death again, and so I won’t.
Here is something else. This has been kicked around for years and years in the city. It is the old idea that men are actors and all of life is simply a play. Let me start off with a story.
One time I was talking in public and a man came up to me afterwards. He said, “A lot of what you said seemed to make sense. But after listening to you talk, in a way it sounds as if a person who actually understood all of it and lived the way I think they would live, would be living a very shallow existence. If I saw through everything going on — that is, I could suddenly just peer through it — wouldn’t I be kind of a shallow person?” In a sense, the person was right. In a sense. Because ordinary consciousness cannot even see this: do you understand how shallow any true religious person would be? No subconscious motivations, no social lying, no buttering up to people. Oh, would they be shallow. Plus, as you might realize, they would not be very popular.
If you were freed from some of the upper circuit hungers so that they were no longer necessary for you personally, may I suggest that you would then see that no one else on this planet has the least amount of control over what they are doing, thinking, or saying. (Except maybe you and I; you couldn’t be sure of anyone else.) Then the whole idea about life being some sort of stage drama is no longer a literary curio from the 1600’s. The beauty of escape is that you can then willfully treat it as an act. And nobody else knows about it, or else you’d be a terrible actor. Of course, you could not understand this and be a terrible actor. There’s no way to do it wrong. When you find out it doesn’t make a bit of difference to you, you just go along with everyone else’s drama. It becomes a matter of efficiency. But you can willfully treat it as an act. Other people are also acting in the drama, but they take it seriously. They struggle with the part. They curse the director; they don’t like the hours; they don’t want to rehearse; they want somebody else’s part. They don’t like their costume. They feel like they’ve been typecast. Everyone else is complaining about it and doing all they can to not discuss the fact that the run of the play is someday coming to an end. “Think about that some other time; it’s better that we just complain about what’s going on now.”
While everyone else is doing that, you could be this totally shallow person. But the shallowness would be that you simply see what’s going on. To get off the track right quick, here is the First Story again. In the city it is assumed that anyone who had some kind of secret knowledge would tell everyone else. That is First Story. Anybody who would tell everybody else what they know, don’t know nothing. That’s a scientific fact, even among scientists who use English that way. Anyone who knows does not talk about it. Because if you know anything, you also know that you can’t tell anyone. You see, I can’t tell you. That’s why I talk about this and that, and this and that. It’s all to keep from talking about what It is. What It is, is real simple. But if I got it over with right now and told you the secret, most of you here would have a deluxe blank look on your face. A few of you would want to say, “Ah, would you repeat that so I can be sure I got it?” Of course, it would be a form of suicide on my part were I to be so deranged as to do that.
Back to where we were. Willfully acting, in one verbal sense, is what This is about. But you do suspect (and/or expect) that I mean more that “acting” in its ordinary sense. It’s not all that different — it’s just off at a different angle. It is a kind of total insincerity. You have to see that in the city, all ideas of sincerity are on the same level as hair color. “Some people are sincere, others are insincere.” And some people have blond hair, others have black hair. That’s it. They are all acting and no one knows it. They are doing what they have to do. That is what makes it preposterous.
I’m going to do something I’ve never done for everybody. I’m going to give you a guarantee of what will very specifically, and very quickly, affect your nervous system. It will happen within 14 days if you do this. I give you an absolute guarantee. If you start tomorrow this will put your nervous system in the beginning of an agreeable shock within 14 days — some of you within 12 days. You have to use the “Look Around and Smile Method,” nonstop, every time you move from one spatial area to another. That includes from one room to another, from a car into the open, and from the open into a car. It also includes going from one person to another in your conversation. For 14 days, look to the left and smile, and look to the right and smile when you change areas.
Simultaneously, you must use the “Exacto-Lips Method.” That is, no matter what you are thinking or feeling, don’t let your lips say anything you don’t want them to say. Give no notice whatsoever to what you are thinking. Make your lips say only that which you will never have to feel bad about. Inside, I don’t care if you feel like you’re going to die. Don’t say ANYTHING which you will have to go back and explain, clarify or regret. I don’t care how it cuts down on your conversation for 14 days. You can control your lips, no matter what your brain is thinking. You cannot presently control your brain activity, and you cannot necessarily control your tongue, but you can control your lips.
If you use the “Look Around and Smile Method” and the “Exacto-Lips Method” simultaneously for 14 days, it will begin to expand the limits of where your nervous system reaches in you. I give you a personal guarantee. You will not be the same person — you will no longer be exactly as you are this second if you will do those two things.
